What do I do my baby's hair is dry?

Healthy hair journey
Quite  often I come across a parent whose biggest concern is what to use if her baby's hair is dry.  Over the years this has been a major concern for many of my clients women and children.  After servicing a pleather of their people in my salon. I have pulled together some tips I have seen work.

One of the biggest challenges to getting our tresses to stop feeling, looking or being dry is finding the keys to get the moisture inside the hair shaft. In a lot of cases some of the products we use are topical and they respond that way. They sit on top of the hair shaft. In order for the moisture to get  inside we must dive a little deeper.
I have two daughters and now a granddaughter as well, that had the same experience. One daughter's hair was easy and the other was more of a challenge. One of my daughters literally kept me up at night trying to figure out the perfect combination for her hair texture and type. She had thick tight coils that wouldn't retain moisture. Her scalp was severely dry. At first I did like many and started buying anything and everything  off the shelf that I thought would do the trick. To no avail. Then one day I decided, wait a minute, it's time to do something different.

I began to study her  hair more closely I found that one of the key elements was her eating habits. Yes, I said it.

Her eating habits that eventually pointed back to my eating habits.

Now mind you she was only 2 at the time. So you maybe asking how in the world had my eating habits affected her. Being that she was only two her eating habits was a lot like the eating habits I had while pregnant with her.  That might seem a little strange. But during pregnancy I ate a lot of foods high in  sugar. Which helped to form unhealthy eating habits for her in my womb. To be honest, some adults even struggle with unhealthy eating habits today and don't realize they have eating habits like their mother did as well. So in order to change one of the areas that was causing her dryness I had to change what she ate.

I began to see the necessity for more water in her diet amongst other things. In essence I worked from inside out. Replacing sugary drinks with water. At first she resisted. But the more I drank it around her the more she was open to the idea. Then she started to notice her dads drink of choice was water and  she wanted to be just like him. So that part came easy.

Next I tried to find more creative ways to add fruit and vegetables into her diet. This was no easy feet, she wanted to eat what I loved. Potatoes was my kryptonite, and that was what she wanted her meal to consist off. Then if that wasn't enough she struggled with eczema, which added to the dryness of her scalp. A lot of the foods that were good for her caused her severe allergic reactions that were unbearable at times.

Things such as: Wheat, grains, breads, pastas, nuts.

Leaving me no choice but to resort to things that she could eat.

A lot more fruits and veggies. I packed her lunch everyday for years and got very skillful at how to add them to dishes she would eat.  A friend of mine PatriceSSykes talks more about healthy foods on her blog  and how to incorporate them into meals your kids will love. That will help tremendously.

Things like: Fruit, apples, salads (with mixed veggies) meat wraps w/o bread were just a few of the items I incorporated.

Finally it was working, no eczema breakouts. Yay, GOD!,

Tip 1: Make certain that your dryness is not an medical condition. (Eczema)
Tip 2: Avoid the foods don't add nutrients to your tresses?  (Vegetables and fruit are loaded with vitamins great for hair)
Tip3: Drink plenty of water. (Moisture begins from the inside out)
Tip 4: Moisturize tresses with satin oil prior to your twist out. (The exact oil I used for my family)

After realizing  her need for moisture was more than I though at first. I took a different approach to her tresses dryness  I started her on a healthy hair journey  and developed a personalized  strategy for her specific hair texture and type.  as you  can see in the picture above the results were amazing.

OMG! Yes! I'm the one that can't figure out my "hair texture"! I guess I'm old school. I just know my hair is tight coiled and hard to comb plus I'm tender-headed as heck. Me and water have fought for years but I'm back to drinking more water now and of course, I already eat my veggies and fruits. So, I hope it all comes together soon because my hair has been dry for a few months and it's not healthy.
